Azalea (Rhododendron)

The Azalea is now well-established in living rooms and gardens. It is a very diverse plant that catches the eye both indoors and outdoors. The Azalea has large, full flowers and is available in various colours. The Azalea also blooms extravagantly. So it’s no surprise that this plant is so popular.

Origin

The Azalea is a member of the Rhododendron family and originates from Japan, China, Thailand and other south-east Asian countries, where the plant grows in mountainous areas. In Japan the Azalea is also known as a bringer of luck. The Rhododendron genus consists of no fewer than 1,000 species. The name of the plant is derived from the Greek words ‘Rhodos’ and ‘dendron’, which mean ‘rose’ and ‘tree’. Literally translated the Rhododendron is therefore a rose tree. However, the Rhododendron is not a rose species; the comparison is due to the fact that both species produce lovely full flowers.

Extravagant indoor bloomer

Because of the many different varieties, the Azalea works in any interior. Nowadays houseplants no longer need to be lined up symmetrically on the windowsill. Consumers are keen to experiment with different colours, varieties, sizes and positions. The various colours and shapes are ideal for this.
